In the FORT WORTH STAR TELEGRAM, Jan Hubbard writes "the Mavericks began their new five-game plan Monday night and Avery Johnson said the goals were much the same as the first five. Johnson said there had been too much emphasis­—presumably by fans, media and players—on the relative importance of the 82-game season. The Mavericks spent all last season saying nothing mattered until the playoffs and because of the first-round loss to Golden State, Johnson wanted to break the season down in smaller increments. Johnson said the goals in five-game sets are not necessarily five victories, although obviously that would be the ideal."
