Russia backs Syrian forces in major assault on insurgents

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Russia and Syria carried out what appeared to be the first major coordinated assaults on Syrian insurgents on Wednesday, targeting rebels in the west rather than Islamic State militants, a monitor said.
