CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard tightened her grip on power on Thursday when an opposition lawmaker suddenly defected to become Speaker, boosting her chances of surviving a full term in office and reducing reliance on independent MPs to pass laws.
