Syria prayers to test Assad's pledge over crackdown

AMMAN, Aug 19 - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's pledge to the world that he has halted his crackdown on a five-month uprising will be tested on Friday when protesters are expected to call for his downfall, backed for the first time by the United States and Europe.
